What’s involved and who can apply?

VTOS is a return to learning programme which allows adult learners time to explore and develop their skills and interests in a general learning course where they can build their confidence and identify opportunities for building a career. A VTOS course is of two years duration and is provided free of charge. Students also get a training allowance equal to their social welfare payment and are entitled to a meal and travel allowance as well. To qualify for VTOS, generally students must be:

Aged 21 years and over

Getting unemployment payments for at least 6 months

Be in receipt of One Parent Family Payment

In receipt of a disability payment.

In first year our students develop their skills across a broad range of subjects or modules particularly communications, computer skills, maths, career and personal development and a number of practical skills. Students complete General Learning Certificate QQI Level 3 and/or Employability Skills QQI Level 3.

In year two we build on these skills and students can choose from a range of subjects which will help them access employment or progress to third level education. In years two students can complete the General Learning Certificate QQI Level 5 and/or Business Administration QQI Level 5.

Getting back to Education with confidence

The Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme in Gorey Adult Education Centre is actively recruiting new students for September 2016. Twenty students will get an opportunity to return to full time education and achieve qualifications in a wide range of skills for employment or to progress to third level education.

VTOS is geared for those who may not have experienced success in their previous time in education but are now interested in getting a quality qualification across a broad range of subjects. The students work at their studies with lots of support and advice, to build new skills in computers, communications, reading, writing skills, maths and social studies.  Students will also have an opportunity to study practical subjects; cookery, metalwork and art.

The course can last for two years, after successfully completing first year and is full time.  Based on the normal school year, it will suit adult learners who have children in primary or secondary school. Childcare support may also be available for those who need it. Gorey Adult Education Centre is a modern, welcoming facility and out teaching staff welcomes students and provide individual advice and support to make the return to education an enjoyable experience.

The first year is designed to build a solid foundation of up to date skills, to access employment in today’s economy. In the second year there is the opportunity to acquire a QQI Level 5 qualification in Business or General Studies which will help students to progress to third level education or employment depending on the persons plan.

In VTOS our adult learners are treated as individuals but are encouraged to work as a group. Here is what some of our students have said:

“With the support of VTOS and my classmates, I have not looked back since September.” David O Connell.

“Learn how to use computers , build literacy and maths skills but most of all your confidence”. David Murphy.

You are welcome to call into the Adult Education Centre in Civic Square opposite the library to discuss learning options on VTOS – you will not be disappointed!
