Kilmacthomas Vocational School, now St. Declan’s Community College, began around the time free education arrived and began to provide post-primary education in the area. The school expanded dramatically over the years and became a centre of excellence in every subject area.
As a 700 pupil school, it is a large provider in the county and is recognised for the great achievements of its students. While providing a comprehensive curriculum, it is true to its vocational education roots in terms of the practical skills courses that are available to students. The record of achievement of students attending St. Declan’s is exemplary. Besides national awards in many areas of endeavour, students enjoy a happy and rewarding experience and respond to the high expectations set by teachers to become the best they can. The atmosphere of diligence and enterprise is evident in so much of what goes on in the school.
