Waterford College of Further Education held its Open Day recently, receiving a record number of visitors from schools and the general public. Students from all over the South East made their way through the doors of one of Waterford’s most iconic buildings to sample, first hand, over 30 full-time course options.
The Open Day is a unique opportunity for prospective students to experience the College, to meet tutors and discover the exciting academic and progression routes available to them. Displays and presentations were interactive and utilized a range of digital and ICT technologies. The fully equipped gym, broadcast and recording studios, beauty and hairdressing salons, multimedia technology lab and the photography studio were opened up to prospective students.
Tours of both the Parnell St., and Johnstown campuses were available and the College transformed into an informational map, flowing from one experience and field of study to another.
Visitors were immediately greeted with sublime cuisine as the Tourism and Hospitality Dept. showcased its unique etiquette, engaging their visitors with wine and entrees.
Groups toured via corridors pulsing with electronic music and visual projections.
The Art studio provided a window into the evolution of a visual piece, as visitors watched an artist in creation, allowing them to study technique and the creative impulse in real time. The Nursing Department focused on its extensive medical technology, while the Childcare Department offered a tangible, warm and informative experience, appropriate to the academic content.
Electronic Engineering, Computer Networking and Construction Studies assembled a futuristic display of technology and hardware, much to the awe of visiting students. The Business Department used ICT as its main presentation, a powerful display of digital age communication and marketing strategy.
Hourly tours of Johnstown showcased the extensive, fully equipped carpentry and construction workshops.
The facility also boasts a professional recording studio and more recently, an advanced digital radio broadcast system. This facility is key in the provision of the new Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Audio/ Visual Media, which will be offered from September onwards, based on demand. This course will focus on documentary making, music and soundtrack production, film and radio.
VTOS launched their broadest and most accessible programme yet, structured to provide an intuitive and cutting edge curriculum. It is a ground breaking provision, designed with the individual at its core.
